6 Signs Your Fence Needs Replacing, Not Just Repairing

Kalid·2025-09-18·3 min read

No fence lasts forever, and there comes a point where patching things up stops making sense. The trick is knowing when you have crossed that line. Here are six signs that your Brisbane fence is past the point of repair.

1. Multiple Leaning Posts

A single leaning post can be re-set or replaced. But when two or three posts along the same run are tilting, the problem is usually deeper. The footings may have been too shallow from the start, or the soil has shifted over time.

Straightening multiple posts means digging them out, repouring footings, and re-fixing everything in between. At that point, the cost and disruption are close to what a new fence would be, and a new fence comes with the confidence of proper footings throughout.

2. Widespread Rot in Timber

Rot in one or two palings is a simple swap. Rot in the rails, posts, or across large sections of the fence is a different story. Once the structural timber is compromised, the fence cannot carry its own weight properly, let alone handle wind.

Check the base of timber posts where they meet the ground. Push a screwdriver into the timber. If it goes in easily, the post is rotten through. If multiple posts are in this condition, replacement is the practical option.

3. Termite Damage

Termites work from the inside out, so by the time you see external damage, the internal timber is often hollowed out. Tap timber posts and rails with a hammer. A hollow sound means the termites have already done significant damage.

Repairing termite-damaged fencing does not solve the underlying problem. The new timber will be at risk too unless you address the termite activity. Often, replacing with Colorbond or treated timber and getting a termite treatment done at the same time is the most sensible approach.

4. Rust Holes in Colorbond

Surface rust on Colorbond can sometimes be treated and touched up. But if the rust has eaten through the panel, or if corrosion is present along the bottom edge across multiple panels, the steel has lost its protective coating and will continue to deteriorate.

This is most common on older Colorbond fences or those installed too close to the ground where moisture sits. Once the steel is perforated, patching is temporary at best.

5. Repeated Repairs That Keep Coming

If you are calling someone out every year to fix the same fence, add up what you have spent over the past few years. Often the cumulative repair costs exceed what a new fence would have cost, and you are still left with an aging fence that will need more work.

A new fence resets the clock. Built correctly with quality materials, it should not need attention for years.

6. The Fence Looks Worse Than Everything Around It

This one is less about structural failure and more about how the fence affects your property. If your house, garden, and driveway all look good but the fence lets the whole picture down, replacement might be the right move. Street appeal matters, and the fence is one of the most visible features of any property.
