Retaining Wall Materials Compared: Which One Suits Your Brisbane Property?

Yash·2025-06-19·4 min read

Choosing a retaining wall material is one of the first decisions you will face when managing a slope on your Brisbane property. Each option handles the job differently, and the right choice depends on your site, your budget, and how long you want the wall to last.

Concrete Sleepers

Concrete sleepers are the most popular choice for retaining walls across Brisbane, and for good reason. They are strong, long-lasting, and handle moisture without deteriorating. A well-built concrete sleeper wall can last 50 years or more with minimal maintenance.

They come in a range of finishes, from plain grey to textured patterns that mimic timber or stone. The steel H-beams that support them are galvanised for corrosion resistance.

Best for: walls over 600 millimetres high, structural applications, long-term durability, and low maintenance.

Considerations: heavier to install (requires machinery for larger walls), higher upfront cost than timber.

Timber Sleepers

Timber retaining walls use treated hardwood or treated pine sleepers stacked horizontally between timber or steel posts. They have a natural appearance that blends well with gardens and landscaping.

Treated pine is the more affordable option but has a shorter lifespan, typically 15 to 20 years. Hardwood sleepers like ironbark or spotted gum last considerably longer and are naturally resistant to termites and rot.

Best for: garden walls, low to medium height applications, properties where a natural look is important.

Considerations: timber will eventually break down, especially in contact with soil. Treated pine needs replacing sooner than concrete or hardwood.

Sandstone Blocks

Sandstone is a classic choice that suits older Brisbane homes and properties going for a traditional look. Sandstone blocks are heavy and durable, and they develop a weathered character over time that many homeowners find appealing.

However, sandstone is softer than concrete and can erode in areas with heavy water flow. It is also one of the more expensive options, particularly for larger walls.

Best for: decorative or feature walls, heritage properties, low to medium heights.

Considerations: cost, limited structural capacity for taller walls, and susceptibility to erosion if drainage is poor.

Concrete Block (Masonry)

Concrete masonry blocks (like Besser blocks) are sometimes used for retaining walls, particularly where a rendered or painted finish is planned. They are strong and versatile, but they require steel reinforcement and core-filling with concrete for structural applications.

Best for: walls that will be rendered or painted, integration with other masonry structures like house walls or garden features.

Considerations: requires more labour and materials than sleeper systems, and the finished look depends heavily on the quality of rendering.

Boulder Walls

Boulder or rock walls use large natural stones stacked and interlocked to retain soil. They suit properties with a natural or bushland setting and can look excellent when done well.

Boulder walls rely on the weight and interlocking of the stones for stability. For taller walls, engineering input is needed to ensure they perform structurally. Drainage behind boulder walls is critical because water cannot pass through the stones easily.

Best for: natural settings, rural or semi-rural properties, feature walls.

Considerations: requires careful selection and placement of stones, limited height without engineering, and drainage must be addressed.

How to Decide

Start with the height and purpose of the wall. For anything over a metre, concrete sleepers are hard to go past in terms of strength and longevity. For garden beds and low walls under 600 millimetres, timber gives you a warm, natural finish at a lower cost.

Your soil type, drainage conditions, and proximity to structures all factor in as well. If you are unsure, a site inspection will clarify what your block actually needs.
