How Long Does a Colorbond Fence Actually Last?

Kalid·2025-06-04·3 min read

One of the most common questions we hear from Brisbane homeowners is how long a Colorbond fence will last. The short answer is 20 to 30 years or more. The longer answer depends on a few factors that are worth understanding before you invest.

What BlueScope Says

BlueScope, the manufacturer of Colorbond steel, backs their product with a warranty that typically covers 10 years or more depending on the specific product and conditions. That warranty covers defects in the steel coating, not installation or accidental damage.

But the practical lifespan of Colorbond goes well beyond the warranty period. When installed correctly and maintained occasionally, a Colorbond fence can easily outlast the mortgage on the house behind it.

Installation Quality Matters Most

The steel itself is durable. What lets a Colorbond fence down early is almost always the installation. Posts that are too shallow will lean. Rails that are not properly fixed will loosen. Panels that are not seated correctly will rattle and eventually work free.

A well-installed Colorbond fence, with posts set at least 600 millimetres deep in concrete and correct rail spacing, will handle Brisbane's storms, heat, and humidity without issue for decades.

Coastal and Harsh Environments

If your property is within a few kilometres of the coast, salt air accelerates corrosion on any metal surface. BlueScope offers specific grades for coastal and severe environments. If your fencer is not asking about your proximity to the coast, that is a red flag.

In standard Brisbane suburban conditions, the regular Colorbond range performs well. But if you are on a ridge with high wind exposure or near Moreton Bay, it is worth specifying the right grade from the start.

The Maintenance That Extends Life

Colorbond is marketed as low-maintenance, and that is accurate, but it is not zero maintenance. A wash with soapy water once or twice a year removes built-up dirt, pollen, and grime that can affect the coating over time.

Pay attention to the bottom of panels where they sit close to the ground. Soil and mulch that sits against the steel traps moisture and can cause localised corrosion. Keep the base clear and you will avoid the most common issue we see on older Colorbond fences.

When Colorbond Fences Fail Early

The fences we replace before their time almost always share the same problems: shallow posts, no concrete footings, or the wrong grade of steel for the location. In some cases, cheap fixings have corroded and panels have come loose.

None of these are problems with the Colorbond material itself. They are installation shortcuts that catch up with you over time. Choosing an experienced, licensed fencer is the single best thing you can do to get the full lifespan out of your fence.

Worth the Investment

A Colorbond fence is one of the longer-lasting improvements you can make to a Brisbane property. When it is done right, you are looking at decades of service with very little upkeep. That is hard to beat.
