Choosing the Right Fence Height for Your Brisbane Property

Yash·2025-12-03·3 min read

Most residential fences in Brisbane are built at 1.8 metres (about six feet). It is the standard height that provides privacy, security, and meets most council requirements without needing special approval. But it is not the only option, and sometimes a different height makes more sense.

The 1.8-Metre Standard

For boundary fences in residential areas, 1.8 metres is the default. It is tall enough that most people cannot see over it from ground level, which gives you genuine privacy in your backyard. It is also tall enough to contain most dogs and deter casual intruders.

At 1.8 metres, you generally do not need council approval in most Brisbane council areas. This makes it the simplest option from a compliance perspective.

When You Might Want Taller

There are situations where a taller fence makes sense. Properties on busy roads or near commercial areas sometimes benefit from a 2.1-metre fence for additional noise reduction and privacy. If your yard sits lower than your neighbour's, a standard height fence may not provide the privacy you expect because they can look down over it.

However, anything over 2 metres typically requires a development application with your local council. This adds time, cost, and is not always approved. Check with your council before committing to a taller design.

When Shorter Works Better

Front fences are often built lower, typically around 1.2 metres. A tall, solid fence across the front of a property can look imposing and sometimes clashes with the streetscape. A lower fence, or one with some visual permeability like aluminium or spaced timber, keeps the front yard feeling open while still defining the boundary.

Some estates and council areas have specific front fence height limits, often around 1.2 metres for solid fences and up to 1.5 metres for open or see-through designs.

Pool Fencing Has Its Own Rules

Pool fences in Queensland must be a minimum of 1.2 metres high, measured from the outside finished ground level. This is a legal requirement, not a recommendation. The fence must also meet non-climbable zone requirements and have self-closing, self-latching gates.

Pool fencing rules are separate from general boundary fence guidelines. If your pool fence forms part of the boundary fence, it needs to comply with pool safety legislation along the entire section.

Sloping Blocks Change the Maths

On a sloping block, the effective height of a fence changes depending on which side you measure from. A fence that is 1.8 metres on the high side might only be 1.2 metres on the low side, or vice versa.

Stepping the fence (building it in level sections with drops between them) is the most common approach for slopes. Raking (angling the fence to follow the slope) is another option but works better with some materials than others.

Either way, the height needs to work from both sides, which requires careful planning on anything other than flat ground.

Think About What You Actually Need

The right height depends on your situation. Privacy, security, pet containment, pool compliance, streetscape, and council rules all play into the decision. If you are not sure, a site inspection will clarify what works best for your property and what approvals might be needed.
